Rakshabandhan is made up of two words ‘Raksha’ and ‘Bandhan’. Raksha means Protection and Bandhan means Bond.

It’s one of the prestigious festivals of the Hindu religion. In this festival, the love of sisters for brothers is shown by tying rakhi on their wrists. This festival not only shows the immense love between each other but also highlights the sacred relationship between them. Also, it strengthens the bond between them.

This festival is celebrated every year in the month of Sawan and according to the English calendar, it falls mostly in the month of August.

It’s celebrated with great zeal in India. Sisters eagerly wait for this day. On this day they tie rakhis to their brothers, they pray to God for their prosperous and healthy life. In return, the brothers show love to their sisters and take a vow to perform their duties well.

When the war was going on between the Muslims and the Rajputs, the wife of the king of Chittor, Karnavati who was a widow was scared by Bahadur Shah Zafar, so the queen sent a rakhi to Humayun, pleading for help. Humayun accepted the request and protected her and her subject from Bahadur Shah Zafar.

From that day Humayun accepted the queen as his sister and thus people started celebrating it as a festival.

( b ) King Bali threatens Lord Indra

According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Indra was threatened by King Bali, his wife Sachi tied a bracelet of protection in his hand to protect him from the evil king Bali. As a result, the rise of Rakshabandhan took place.

3. How do we celebrate Rakshabandhan?

The preparations for Rakshabandhan start a week before. Rakhis and sweets shops start setting up in the markets. These shops are most crowded one day before the festival and on the day of the festival.

People buy sweets according to their needs. Sisters start buying Rakhis from the markets. When they tie rakhis to their brothers, first put a piece of cloth on their heads, perform tika, sweeten their mouths with sweets, and ultimately pray for their healthy life.
